CastMane

If the app crashes mid-recording, your footage survives.

Many recorders write the .mp4 index only on clean shutdown — if the app crashes mid-recording, the whole file is often lost. CastMane is built around a single principle: a crash must never cost you the footage.

Verified: a recording killed with kill -9 remains fully playable (h264, ffprobe-checked). See the crash-safety guide.

Crash-safe by design

Fragmented container, .part staging, atomic rename, graceful shutdown escalation, and an encoder watchdog.

Wayland-first, X11 fallback

Native capture via xdg-desktop-portal ScreenCast + GStreamer on Wayland, automatic ffmpeg (x11grab) fallback on X11.

Minimal UI

Record / Stop / Pause, elapsed timer, status line. Draft / Balanced / High quality presets.

One-file install

A single AppImage bundles Python, Qt, and all dependencies. No venv, no pip, no toolchain.

Terminal window
chmod +x CastMane-*.AppImage
./CastMane-*.AppImage

That’s it. Full instructions are in Installation.
